Tennis Australia National Tournament Calendar

It has become increasingly apparent that some Western Australian tournament players are manipulating the tournament entry timeline process.  As a consequence, Tennis West Tournament Operations has decided to enforce strict tournament entry deadlines, effective from WA State Hard Courts Goldfields Open (June 4 -6 2011).  Late entries will not be accepted beyond the advertised closing date.

Tournament Directors are requested to liaise with Tennis West Tournament Operations staff to establish the most appropriate closing date for their event.

We trust that players and parents will acknowledge this tightening of process as a step towards greater professionalism by all key stakeholders.

Final rematch for Brazil and Portugal FIFA U-20

Exactly 20 years have passed since Brazil and Portugal squared off in the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The pair go head-to-head again this Saturday at El Campin in Bogota in a re-run of the 1991 final.

The game
Brazil-Portugal,
Bogota,
Saturday 20 August,
20.00 (local time)

The stakes
Brazil and Portugal have met at the FIFA U-20 World Cup three times in the past, with the Europeans winning twice and the South Americans once. Amaral scored the only goal of the game to hand Portugal victory in the 1989 semi-finals, and the Portuguese triumphed again two years later, winning the 1991 final 4-2 on penalties. The most recent clash came in the 1995 semi-finals, when a Caio strike was enough to see Brazil through to the final.

Road to the final
Brazil opened with a muted 1-1 draw against Egypt, but the junior Seleção shifted smoothly up through the gears in their next two matches, defeating Austria 3-0 and Panama 4-0 and comfortably winning their group. Round-of-16 opponents Saudi Arabia had been the surprise package of the tournament up to that point, but the Brazilians were by then in their stride and cruised to a 3-0 victory.

The last eight brought the mouth-watering prospect of a clash with a very good Spain side, and the Pereira crowd were duly treated to a thriller than ended with the South Americans squeezing through 4-2 on penalties. Ney Franco's side stayed true to their rousing attacking style in the semi-final against Mexico, deservedly winning 2-0 and booking a place in the decider.

Brazil have wowed the crowds and pundits alike with some sparkling attacking football, and have scored 15 goals at the tournament so far. Striker Henrique has emerged as the deadliest sharp-shooter with five of those goals, followed not far behind by Philippe Coutinho and Dudu on three apiece.

While Brazil were title favourites even before a ball was kicked, Portugal were dark horses at best, making their progress to the final a genuine surprise. That said, the road to Bogota has also been a lot less smooth for the Europeans than for their South American rivals.

Portugal actually finished the group stage with exactly the same number of points as A Seleção, but the former's matches were tight with the emphasis on defence. They began with a goalless draw against Uruguay, before two 1-0 victories over Cameroon and New Zealand. The last sixteen clash with Guatemala produced yet another 1-0 win, while the quarter-final against Argentina remained goalless for 120 minutes and was ultimately settled on penalties. The Portuguese reserved their best display so far for the semi-final against France, scoring more than one goal in a match for the first time in Colombia with a 2-0 victory.

Not since 1997 has a team made it all the way to the final while scoring as few goals as Portugal, but on the other hand, keeper Mika has yet to concede a goal in normal or extra time. Indeed, the Europeans are only 19 minutes short of equalling Brazil’s record of 634 minutes without conceding at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The stat
8 – Brazil are through to the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the eighth time. The South Americans have won the trophy four times, most recently at the 2003 edition in the United Arab Emirates. Portugal have a 100 percent record in the final after reaching and winning it twice, at the 1989 tournament in Saudi Arabia and on home soil in 1991.

The words
"It’s a clash between contrasting schools of thought – and not just the Portuguese school versus the Brazilian school. It’ll be a meeting between the European and the South American schools. Brazil and Portugal have played some very big games over the years and I’m sure this one won’t be any exception. The team which ends up winning will have deserved it,“ Brazil coach Ney Franco

Poland and Ukraine are about to write a new chapter in the history of the UEFA European Football Championship – and to generate further excitement among each population the two local organising committees (LOCs) launched a promotional campaign called Friends of UEFA EURO 2012.
Up to 100 people in either country are enjoying the privilege of being nominated Friends of UEFA EURO 2012. Half of them will be selected by their respective LOC from public figures and celebrities, while the remaining spots will be open to the community, from five-year-olds to 95-year-olds, via various competitions. Children have, for instance, been able to participate in drawing contests across several age categories.

These competitions are giving local people the chance to express themselves about the meaning of UEFA EURO 2012 in their country, as well as reflecting on the significance of the competition slogan Creating History Together. The campaign kicked off in September, when most teams began the qualifying phase of UEFA EURO 2012, and will last several months.
Regular announcements are made concerning the competition winners and any newly nominated public figures in the exclusive group of Friends of UEFA EURO 2012. India tour of England, 4th Test: England v India at The Oval

India tour of England, 4th Test: England v India at The Oval

"We are shouting for England in this one! If they win South Africa will go to No.2!" yells Paul, from South Africa.

See the game Click Here

Strauss and Cook are out there. Helmeted and menacing. There's that glint in Cook's eye. Or maybe my imagination's working overtime. RP Singh has the new ball. Three slips and a gully. Let's go ...

1050 Cheers Nitin. I wonder if India have got over their torment of Alastair Cook batting for hours and hours. Because he's about to try again.

John Muir weighs in: "A good test (toss?) for England to win, not least because it gives Jimmy Anderson a bit more time before he has to bowl. I'm mystified by RP's selection for India- surely Munaf must be in much better shape to play a test?"

"What does Broad have to do to get some recognition as England's most important player this series? All Atherton/Gower/Hussain want to talk about is Anderson, Atherton didn't even mention him at all when talking about England's attack this series! Truly unbelievable," spews David.

Gary points out that "surely it is last chance saloon for Mr Bopara now... surely!" Indeed. James Taylor is not merely breathing down his neck, but puffing fire balls like a dragon. On that forgettable note, I shall take leave and hand over commentary duties to George Binoy.

1040 Twenty minutes to go for the first ball. That gives you enough time to explore Howzat - our online social cricket game.

Ravi sounds cynical: "So, if you are an Indian fan and want to see them batting, you can come back on Day 3 and 4 to see them bat for two consecutive innings. I am an Indian fan and it pains." A lot of fans are in agony to find that PK is missing out. They reckon he has been one of India's better batsmen on tour. Ouch.

Munaf Patel has been in England since the start of the tour, played in the World Cup, played in West Indies ... but India have decided RP Singh is a better option here. He last played a Test in April 2008. India weren't world No. 1 then. They aren't world No. 1 now. May be, the left-arm angle and his ability to swing it went in his favour.

England win the toss and choose to bat. "It looks like a good wicket to bat on, and I reckon it is dry underneath," says Andrew Strauss. England are unchanged from Edgbaston as they begin life as the World's No. 1 side. Dhoni admits he would have looked to bat too. Praveen Kumar is out injured and RP Singh comes into the side. "We have been outplayed, but we aren't demoralised and we up for the fight today," says Dhoni.

1020 Sourav Ganguly declares that this is a lovely batting pitch, and he will want to bat first. Wasim Akram chips in with "this is a typical Oval wicket". There will be swing and seam until tea on day 1, and then it will flatten out, he says. Ganguly believes it won't turn as much as The Oval traditionally does, since there is some grass on the surface.
