A new year. A new competition. 2011 sees Super Rugby entering a new era, with the debut of the Super 15 rugby competition. South Africa, New Zealand and Australia will each have five teams competing in the tournament, which kicks off on 18 February 2011. Here are some of the key features of the new format:
  • The Super 15 will be played over 21 weeks.
  • The first phase is a ‘conference’ phase, played over 18 weeks.
  • During this phase, teams will be divided into three pools of five, grouped by country.
  • Each team has eight home and eight away fixtures during the ‘conference’ phase.
  • After the ‘conference’ phase, the top six teams will compete in a ‘finals’ phase.
  • The new team is the Melbourne Rebels.
